This gallery is a breathtaking showpiece in itself. Among the modern sculptures, a huge bronze figure by the famous sculptor Meera Mukherjee is of outstanding importance. Works of the other noted sculptors of the country such as Chintamani Kar, Bimal Kundu, Manik Talukdar, Somnath Hoare and Niranjan Pridhan are of great artistic value. The Bronze representing ‘Jala Kanya’ by Chintamani Kar is another master piece in the collection. Yet another master piece by Ajit Chakraborthy, labeled as ‘Cupid’, a boy in a standing position is of great aesthetic value.
Another outstanding feature of the Modern Art Gallery is a huge Terra-Cotta mural depicting scenes from Chapter X of the Bhagawad Gita. This unique exposition has been crafted in Calcutta by experts including the well known sculptor Manik Talukdar, in the world famous traditional Terra-Cotta art form of Bengal, as depicted in the priceless temples of Vishnupur. |
